Pinker makes three completely irrational assertions at the beginning of his talk on (ir)rationality. He claims that we (meaning rational, scientific humanity) “have figured out … the origins of the universe, the nature of life and the functioning of the mind.” None of these assertions stands up to scientific scrutiny. The Big Bang theory explains how the universe probably evolved from an undefined something but reveals nothing about its origins. “Science” can tell us a lot about the functioning of biological entities but it does not even have stable consensus on the definition of life, let alone an explanation for its nature. There is a similar situation concerning the brain (lots of new info) and the hard-to-define mind/consciousness: lots of unproven hypotheses and no scientifically sound, falsifiable theory according to Popper. I am always amazed how some scientists (Naturwissenschaftler) can totally ignore the epistemological basis of science (Wissenschaft) and choose irrational starting points to fight what they perceive as irrationality. (The German terms make the much needed differentiation and help to clarify the picture. If you don’t know them, look them up.)

Does Kaku really believe in string theory? I mean, it is just a theory with a plethora of assumptions and no experimental confirmation, not even a possible one so far. Kaku himself said in another interview that god cannot be scientifically proven since it is not falsifiable. A much more lucid comment, in my opinion.

The audience just could not accept the fact that they were actually (in reality) supporting what John S. Mill suggested, because they want to appear politically correct. But, let's face it, educated people are better at analysing problems and strategising solutions. So, it is inevitable having more of them in governments and parliaments. And, we all would agree (I suppose), it is for the better of our societies.

    • @danielmcdermott3558

@NikolaosEnmetanoia What if the educated use their additional purchasing power in voting to deprive others of their interests wrongfully. Then I suppose only part of society would be better off. Do we have reason to think this will not be the case? While the educated elite don’t get extra votes they use power and influence instead to ensure their interests at the expense of the rest of society, and the world.

Brilliant as always. However, the reason to have chosen the prevention path 20 - 30 years ago, which should also include hypercholesterolemia, in addition to the hypertension, diabetes and obesity, would be for the reduction in morbidity and mortality secondary to heart disease itself, which remains the #1 cause of death in the country, now after Covid is no longer a major issue for most people and has been so since the 1920's.

Slow, stop, reverse the emissions of flammable fossils ASAP. In this area unfortunately Google has chosen to significantly increase its emissions. Google like many corporations that are exclusively focused on money at the expense of all things important to civilization has lost its way. Its founders abandoned "don't be evil" the original mantra. Eric Schmidt is eyeballs deep in the military industrial complex.

Paid for book homeschool education. But I like the idea and she was a social person for the different teachers in the classroom people kid experience. Good to recognize that with kids.
